Balances and scales drift for reasons nobody sees
A weighing balance reacts to the surface it stands on, to a knock during a move, to draughts and to temperature. None of that shows on the display. A verification puts weights of a known value on the pan and records what the balance reads, so the error becomes a number instead of a suspicion. Repeatability and off-centre loading are checked in the same run, because a balance that reads correctly in the middle of the pan can still be wrong at the edge.
