The words people use for renting

| SCBA | Self-contained breathing apparatus. A cylinder and a mask, so a worker breathes air he carries with him instead of the air around him. |
| EEBD | Emergency escape breathing device. A small unit with enough air to walk out of a space, not enough to work in it. |
Rent while your own equipment is being checked
Equipment that is with the workshop is not on your site. MSA recommends calibration at a maximum interval of six months, and detectors that were bought in the same order are due for calibration at the same time. That is the week a spare set is worth what it cost. See ALTAIR 4XR and 5X calibration.
Fall protection has the same problem on a different clock. A harness that has arrested a fall goes out of service immediately, and that one is never planned. See fall protection inspection.
Shutdowns and short projects
A shutdown puts more crews into more confined spaces at once, and the equipment you keep for normal running is sized for normal running. Renting covers the peak without buying sets that then stand still for the rest of the year on your own inspection register.

Breathing apparatus and escape sets
An SCBA gives a worker air to work in an atmosphere he cannot breathe. An EEBD only gives him air to get out. The two are not interchangeable, so a request that says "breathing set" gets a question back about which of the two the job needs.
