What a permit desk asks about a detector

Work around Bintulu runs on gas: processing plants, the port that serves them, and the contractors who work inside them. Before a crew enters a vessel or a confined space, the person who signs the permit asks two things about the detector on the belt: is it within its calibration interval, and where is the certificate that shows it? Both questions have to be answered before the work starts, not after.

What TopBorneo needs to quote your units

Make the list first: make, model, serial number, and the date each unit was last calibrated. Send that list and TopBorneo comes back with what the calibration involves for each unit and a quotation.

The model matters as much as the serial number, because test stands on the bench are model specific. An MSA ALTAIR 4XR and an ALTAIR 5X are set up differently.

Each unit gets a dated calibration certificate.

The certificate, and the log that goes with it

A calibration certificate belongs to one serial number and to no other unit. Your own calibration log is the second half of the file: which detector was calibrated when, and when the next is due. An auditor asks for the log first and the certificates second, so keep them together. If a certificate goes missing during a shutdown, send TopBorneo the serial number and it checks its records for that unit. What such a document should state is on calibration certificates.

Which units go on the bench

The bench in Kota Kinabalu is the MSA GALAXY GX2, built by MSA for its own portable detectors, so detectors from the ALTAIR family go straight on it. What the 4XR and the 5X need in particular is on ALTAIR 4XR and 5X servicing. For a detector of another make, send the make, model and serial number and TopBorneo comes back with what that unit needs. What happens on the bench itself, step by step, is on portable gas detector calibration.

TopBorneo services MSA portable gas detection equipment as an authorised MSA service centre.

What else usually comes due at the same time

The shutdown that brings the detectors out normally brings out breathing apparatus, cylinders and harnesses as well. Those are handled in the same workshop, so they can go on one quotation. See calibration services in Sarawak.

Common questions

Does TopBorneo calibrate gas detectors for sites in Bintulu?

Yes. TopBorneo has supplied customers in Sarawak since 2019. Detectors from sites around Bintulu are calibrated in the workshop, on an MSA GALAXY GX2 automated test bench, and each unit gets a dated calibration certificate.

What comes with a calibrated detector?

A dated calibration certificate for that serial number. If it goes missing, send TopBorneo the serial number and it checks its records for that unit. Keep the certificate with your own calibration log.

How often does a portable gas detector need calibration?

The interval comes from the maker of the detector. MSA recommends a maximum interval of six months for detectors with standard XCell sensors, plus a bump test before each day's use. On high risk sites a quarterly interval is common, and your client contract can set a shorter one.

Can a detector of another make be calibrated?

Send the make, model and serial number. The MSA GALAXY GX2 bench is built for MSA portable detectors and its test stands are model specific, so TopBorneo comes back with what that particular unit needs.

Send your serial numbers

Email the make, model and serial numbers to crm@topborneo.com, or send them on WhatsApp. The Labuan number is +60 10 959 0259 and the Kota Kinabalu number is +60 16 775 0259. TopBorneo replies with the work each unit needs, the documents that come with it, and a quotation.
