Bump test and calibration are two different jobs

Both words get used for the same piece of work, and they are not the same thing.

What it is Who does it
Bump test A short check with real gas to see whether the detector still responds and alarms. Your own crew, on site
Calibration Setting the detector right again against gas of a known concentration, the way a weighing scale is set against a certified weight. TopBorneo, in the workshop

MSA recommends a bump test before each day's use, and calibration at a maximum interval of six months for detectors with standard XCell sensors. Note the word recommends. What binds you in practice is your own procedure and your client's contract, and on high risk sites in Malaysia a quarterly interval is common. The full picture, including what makes a bump test a pass and what happens step by step on the bench, is on portable gas detector calibration.

The office and the workshop are at one address. TopBorneo also has an office in Labuan, and what is supplied from there is on the safety equipment supplier in Labuan page.

Email the make, model and serial numbers, and TopBorneo comes back with what the calibration involves for your units and a quotation. Those three details are what decide which sensors and which test stand a unit needs.

Which detectors go on the bench here

The GALAXY GX2 is built by MSA for its own portable detectors, and its test stands are model specific. Detectors from the MSA ALTAIR family go straight on it. What the 4XR and the 5X need in particular is on ALTAIR 4XR and 5X servicing.

TopBorneo is an authorised MSA service centre for portable gas detection.

For a detector of another make, send the make, model and serial number anyway. What can be done depends on the model, on the gas it needs and on the parts its maker releases, and TopBorneo comes back with what that unit needs.

Rental detectors keep the permit work going

Detectors bought in one order come due for calibration in the same week. TopBorneo rents out portable gas detectors across Malaysia, so a rented set keeps the permit work going while your own units are being calibrated. See gas detector rental.

The same workshop handles breathing apparatus and cylinders, each on its own bench. Those are separate jobs with their own pages: breathing apparatus servicing and cylinder hydrostatic testing.

Common questions

Where can a gas detector be calibrated in Kota Kinabalu?

In the TopBorneo workshop at Lot No 8, Lean Seng Industrial, Jln Undan, 88450 Kota Kinabalu. The bench there is the MSA GALAXY GX2 automated test system. The office at the same address is open Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5pm, and the phone number is 088-422 259.

How often should a portable gas detector be calibrated?

The interval comes from the maker of your detector. For MSA detectors with standard XCell sensors, MSA recommends calibration at a maximum interval of six months, and a bump test before each day's use. Your own procedure or your client's contract may set a shorter interval, and often does.

What do I get back from TopBorneo after a calibration?

Each unit gets a dated calibration certificate. What such a certificate states, and how it is used in a permit file, is set out on the calibration certificates page.

Can a detector from Labuan be calibrated in Kota Kinabalu?

Yes. TopBorneo calibrates portable gas detectors for customers in Labuan and in Sabah, and the bench for that work is the MSA GALAXY GX2 in the workshop. Send the make, model and serial numbers to sales (at) topborneo.com and TopBorneo comes back with what the calibration involves for your units.
